Abstract

Forgetting is a common problem for the elderly, but when it comes to young people it is a remarkable phenomenon. Forgetting the last year(s) lessons is one of the cases that commonly appear between the preparatory level students up to the higher educated ones. Therefore, the aim of this study is to discover the reasons that make some students forget the studied materials. Questionnaire and interview were used to collect data. 204 samples including male and female from three different levels: preparatory, secondary, and undergraduate level, participated in this study. The results revealed that the forgetting problem is caused by the students, teachers, and the curriculum. That is, the students themselves do not know how to study and most of them were not aware of the learning strategies that could help them to remember. Moreover, the students’ purpose of studying, which is affected by their family and society, had a role in the phenomenon of forgetting. The teachers’ method of teaching and their way of testing additionally to their emphasis on certain answers had an impact on increasing the rate of forgetfulness among students. Furthermore, some lessons do not give clear meaning since they did not cover the basic aspects of the content of the lesson. Moreover, some parts were not related to the students’ specialization; in addition, a number of its components were not used in their life. Besides, the students’ forgetting was mainly a result of not understanding the previous lessons. It is believed that the findings of this study could have a profound impact on how to reduce students forgetting by considering the current and the previous finding likewise the suggested solutions
