This study investigates the awareness and self-perception of orthodontic treatment among Libyan adults. Utilizing a comprehensive survey, we assessed both the general knowledge of orthodontic care and individuals' perceptions of their dental aesthetics using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) Aesthetic Component (AC). Our findings indicate a high level of awareness, with 93.7% of respondents recognizing orthodontic treatments. However, only 9.9% had undergone such treatments, suggesting potential barriers to access. Self-perception of dental appearance was largely positive, with 64.1% of participants very satisfied and 27.8% satisfied with their dental aesthetics. The study shows the need for enhanced educational initiatives and policy interventions to bridge the gap between awareness and treatment uptake, and highlights the importance of addressing dental aesthetics in public health strategies to improve overall well-being.
