Influenza disease is one of the most seasonal diseases that affects many people all over the world. influenza 2019 will be specially discussed in this topic.

What is influenza?

It is a viral respiratory disease that affects the nose, throat, and lungs caused by viruses of the family Orthomyxoviridae.

There are 3 types of viruses A, B, and C.Influenza A and B are associated with seasonal influenza, and most outbreaks and epidemics of influenza. Type C is rare and does not usually cause epidemics or outbreaks.

It easily passes from one person to another.

It can make a bacterial infection in the body causing pneumonia and even death.

Seasonal influenza-like influenza 2019 is annual influenza that affects people in winter especially in the period between November and April.

It was a severe season with a high number of deaths and patients all over the world.

It was from (October 1, 2019, to April 4, 2020). It was expected to be one of the worst seasons in several years.

It came in two waves with a hard effect on children.

The season began in October, so it was earlier than usual with the expected wave of influenza B virus then the second wave came with the presence of influenza B viruses like (H1N1).

So, the number of dead children was higher in late February than in the previous seasons for the past ten years. It was approximately 67% sociated with influenza B viruses.

According to (CDC) the center for disease control and prevention, influenza 2019 caused 39 to 56 million flu illnesses.

The 2019 season recorded higher numbers because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The preliminary estimates had adjusted down when the season was officially closed.

The decline in cases by April 2020 was due to the effect of lockdowns aimed at Covid-19, shortening influenza 2019 season by 5 weeks.

According to survey data, CDC estimated that 51.8% of persons from 6 months to older are vaccinated in the 2019_2020 flu season with an increase of about 2.6% from the previous seasons.
